Park Street School

Project Description: The mission of this project was to prepare the former Brimmer School building for the use of the newly established Park Street School. Built in 1913, the structural frame consists of exterior and interior masonry load bearing walls supporting steel beams with terra cotta flat arch tiles framing the floors. The scope of this “gut-renovation” included: exterior masonry restoration and repair to brick walls and limestone trim, underpinning of foundation and cutting down of existing deteriorated timber piles, introduction of steel frames in central masonry bearing wall to support substantial changes of load path due to new openings, addition of reinforced concrete masonry elevator shaft, openings to and infills of terra cotta flat arch floor tiles, construction of mezzanine floor and the introduction of flying steel buttress to support free-standing courtyard wall.
